FOREWORD

It does not take a lot of wisdom to recognize that further discussion of instrumental music in public worship is on the horizon. Everett Ferguson has favored us with a fourth edition of his scholarly study of A Capella Music in the Public Worship of the Church.

Ferguson has a masterful knowledge of Greek and Latin in which the relevant data is to be found. He is unparalleled in the fellowship of Churches of Christ for his grasp of ancient church history.

This study begins with the relevant texts of the New Testament. The history and meaning of the word psallo is examined. Its context in New Testament times is looked at. The testimony of history is surveyed. The reader will find his perplexities about temple music are dealt with. No less considered are quandaries about synagogue music. Rabbinic testimony is considered. Doctrinal considerations are taken up. Ancient authors and works are cited. There is a glossary and a selected Bibliography. Questions for discussion are supplied with each section. Without reservation of any sort, this study is to be recommended to every person whether his interest is great or small.

I am extremely happy to recommend this classic presentation of the case for vocal church music. Everett Ferguson's balanced discussion, supported by astute biblical, historical and theological analysis, must be read by all who seek to be well informed on this important issue. Readers should not miss the positive contribution Ferguson's work makes to the issue of church unity. The position he advocates is one all can embrace.

Professor of Bible, Harding University

Dr. Ferguson's book, A CAPPELLA MUSIC in the Public Worship of the Church, has an incredible shelf life, because the issue it addresses will not die. When first published in 1972, it was timely. Now this fourth edition is even more timely.
Today, I would strongly suggest that Dr. Ferguson's book should be your "court of first resort" on this topic. My reasons are that his research and his organized treatment of a difficult issue are both outstanding. His is that rare book that appeals both to scholar and student alike.

Minister, Waterview Church of Christ, Richardson, Texas

A Cappella Music in the Public Worship of the Church, now in its 4th edition, remains the unsurpassed case for the unique role of unaccompanied singing in Christian worship. Everett Ferguson, one of the most celebrated authorities on early church history in our times, provides a thorough account of the historical, theological, and biblical reasons for unaccompanied singing in worship—a scholarly treatment that is concise, clear, and fair-minded. His erudite study, brimming with the wisdom of ancient Jewish and Christian thinkers, is likely to remain the definitive treatment of this subject in our generation.
